Unlike other business visa types, there is no need to have a job offer to get a Global Talent Visa, but it may speed up the application process. What are the eligibility criteria for a Global Talent Visa?

The exact eligibility criteria that you will need to meet to secure a Global Talent Visa will depend on your occupational field and whether you are a leader or a potential leader. In order to qualify under this route, you must meet the following criteria:

Research or academia

  • Have an eligible job offer as an academic or researcher, an individual fellowship, a research grant approved by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) or an eligible prize. If not, you can have your application peer reviewed
  • Be endorsed* as a leader or potential leader in science, medicine, engineering, humanities, or social science.

You may receive a ‘fast track’ endorsement for the Global Talent visa if you have an eligible job offer as an academic or researcher at an institution approved by the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering and British Academy. You will need to show that you are responsible for academic, research or innovation leadership and development or directing or leading an individual or team research or innovation project or programme of work.

Arts and culture

  • Specialise in combined arts, dance, literature, music, theatre or visual arts, architecture, fashion design, or film and television, including animation, post-production and visual effects
  • Be endorsed as a leader or potential leader
  • Meet the specific requirements for your field of arts and culture – for example, if in the combined arts, you will need to show people have engaged with your work through appearances, performances, publications, and exhibitions. You also have worked in your field for the last 5 years (to apply as a leader) or 3 years (to apply as a potential leader)

Digital technology

  • Have a background in an eligible digital technology role
  • Be endorsed as a leader or potential leader by Tech Nation or have an eligible prize.
  • To qualify as a leader, at least 2 of the following must be true:
    • Have a record of innovation as a founder or senior executive of a product-led digital technology company
    • Have a record of innovation where you’ve worked in a new digital technology field or concept as an employee
    • Have contributed to the digital technology sector outside of work
    • Have set up or worked in a product-led digital technology company, and have made technical, commercial, or entrepreneurial contributions in the digital technology sector
    • Have had research published or endorsed by an expert
  • To qualify as a potential leader, at least 2 of the following must be true:
    • Show innovation as a founder of a product-led digital technology company
    • Have worked in a new digital technology field or concept as an employee
    • Have contributed to the digital technology sector outside of work, for example, by mentoring or through collaborative projects
    • Show you have set up or worked in a product-led digital technology company and have made significant technical, commercial, or entrepreneurial contributions in the digital technology sector
    • Have had research published or endorsed by an expert

Can I switch to a Global Talent Visa?

If you meet the above eligibility criteria for your specialist field, you can make the switch to a Global Talent Visa from another visa type from inside the UK. There are some exceptions, however. You cannot switch to a Global Talent Visa if you currently have a visit visa, short-term student visa, parent of a child Student visa, seasonal worker visa, domestic worker in a private household visa, immigration bail, or if you have permission to stay outside the immigration rules.

How long can I stay in the UK on a Global Talent Visa?

Global Talent Visas are issued for up to 5 years. Before your visa reaches its expiry, it is important to take action to either renew your visa, apply for a different visa, or apply for settlement.

Can a Global Talent Visa be extended?

Yes, as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements, the Global Talent Visa can be further extended for between 1 and 5 years, depending on your needs. Alternatively, you can apply to settle permanently in the UK.

Can I settle in the UK on a Global Talent Visa?

Yes, you can gain indefinite leave to remain (ILR) after living in the UK on a Global Talent Visa continuously for 3 (accelerated route to settlement) or 5 years or more. Whether you qualify for ILR after 3 or 5 years will depend on whether you are a leader or potential leader and your specific field of expertise. ‘Continuously’ means that you must not have lived outside the UK for 180 days in any year in the 3 or 5-year period.

Can I bring my child and partner to the UK?

Yes, you can bring your partner and/or child to the UK to join you as your ‘dependant’ as a Global Talent Visa holder. The eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • To apply for a dependant visa for your partner, you will need to prove you are married or in a civil partnership or have been in a relationship with them for at least 2 years.
  • To bring your child to the UK, they must be under 18. Your child may be eligible if they are over 18 and they currently have permission to be here as your dependant.

Their dependant visa will have the same expiry date as your UK Global Talent Visa.

How much does it cost to apply for a Global Talent Visa?

To apply for a Global Talent Visa from outside the UK, applicants must pay the following fees (as of 2025):

  • Application fee: £561 when applying for endorsement and a further £205 when you apply for the visa
  • Healthcare surcharge (allows access to healthcare while in the UK) – £1,035 per year for each applicant.
